PETALING JAYA: Chrigor Moraes was brought in to strengthen Selangor’s attack this season, but the Brazilian has quickly become much more than just a supporting cast.
In only seven games, the 25-year-old has fired eight goals and provided three assists, proving himself as the Red Giants’ go-to man in front of goal.
He has scored three in Super League, FA Cup (four) and Asean Club Championships (one).
Far from merely linking play with compatriot Willian Lira, Moraes has emerged as the perfect talisman for Selangor.
On Sunday, the former Buriram United striker underlined his hot streak with another dazzling display, firing a hattrick in Selangor’s 9-0 demolition of Malaysian Universities in the FA Cup second leg.
His treble – coming in the 45th, 75th, and 80th minutes – marked his second consecutive hattrick, following his three-goal show in the 5-0 Super League win over Terengganu.
Selangor’s 12-1 aggregate win sealed their place in the quarter-finals, but more importantly, it showcased the ruthless form of their new No. 9.
Moraes himself remains grounded despite his goalscoring heroics.
“I came here to make history and help my team achieve success, but without my teammates, I would not have been able to score. So I want to thank all,” he said.
“It’s my second hattrick for Selangor. I’m happy with it and it gives me more confidence.”
Selangor will turn their attention to the continental stage, where they host Bangkok United in the AFC Champions League Two group stage at the Petaling Jaya Stadium tomorrow and Moraes is eager to deliver again.
“When I was with Buriram, I scored and I’m looking to help Selangor do the same to get our first three points in the ACL,” said the Brazilian.
The Red Giants’ fans have quickly warmed up to their new hero, whose blend of movement, work rate, and predatory finishing has added a new dimension to Katsuhito Kinoshi’s side.
Moraes, in turn, has embraced the club and their ambitions.
“We’ve just started, and I’m looking to make history with this amazing team and fans,” he added.
