PETALING JAYA: Former Harimau Muda captain and former Sabah midfielder Irfan Fazail hopes to experience a resurgence in his twilight years after joining Police for the new Super League season.
The 34-year-old could be a leader and a mentor for the Cops - a side who are unlike most in the top flight, with many of his teammates juggling duties as police officers and footballers.
Irfan sees it as a unique situation, and is ready to embrace the challenge.
“The experience will be different. Some of the boys are full-time officers, and it’s my job to help guide them, on and off the field, when it comes to the game.”
Irfan’s approach is simple -to lead by example.
“I’m impressed with the commitment of the players and I hope they can maintain it throughout the season. Whether it’s on the field or off it, that’s how we make life easier for all of us.”
His words carry weight - not just because of his resume, but because of the way he carries himself.
Irfan, once hailed as one of Malaysia’s brightest young midfielders, has evolved into a steady, no-nonsense presence.
For a club like Police, who are still carving their identity in the Super League, his influence is vital.
Irfan is also realistic. He knows Police are not among the traditional heavyweights in the league, but that doesn’t mean they will back down.
“All the teams competing in the league are prepared. I just hope we can compete with all of them, even if they’re stronger on paper.
‘‘That’s the challenge, and we accept it.”
Last season, Police finished ninth with 27 points and Irfan hopes they can better that this season.
“I hope this team can compete better than last season. That’s the goal, and we’re working every day to close that gap.”
