PETALING JAYA: Vietnam national team coach Kim Sang-sik will be the man in charge of the Asean All-Stars for the Maybank Challenge Cup against Premier League side Manchester United at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on May 28.
The Asean Football Federation (AFF) confirmed that the South Korean had been appointed, thanks to his performance in the AFF Cup, where he led Vietnam to the trophy beating Thailand 5-3 on aggregate in the two-legged final in January.
AFF said in a statement that the game would not just be a football contest but it would symbolize leadership, regional pride, and unity through sports.
They further added that Sang-sik’s leadership was built on a foundation of integrity, discipline, and vision, especially following his success in the AFF Cup, where Vietnam were unbeaten throughout the tournament.
Sang-sik was delighted to be made the coach of the team.
“To be selected to lead a team composed of the finest players in Southeast Asia for a grand match like this is a great honor for me,” said Sang-sik.
“We are not only representing our countries, but together we will show the world the pride, spirit, and strength of our region.”
After a 16-year hiatus, Manchester United return for an epic showdown expected to attract tens of thousands of fans from diverse backgrounds and cultures, showcasing the growing development of football in the region.
Additionally, a key purpose of this match is to raise funds for regional charities, further demonstrating AFF’s commitment to making a positive impact off the field.
AFF president Khiev Sameth said:” Sang-sik’s leadership inspires not only our players but an entire generation of footballers and fans.”
The Asean All-Stars team will feature a selection of top players from all 12 AFF member associations, reflecting the diversity and collective strength of Southeast Asian football.
