Ibrahim out to perform for Elephants after return from hiatus

PETALING JAYA: When it comes to delivering the goods, you can count on Ibrahim Manusi (pic).

Ibrahim used to deliver orders when he was doing e-hailing jobs – and now that he’s with Pahang football team, this talented defensive midfielder will also be looking at delivering goals in their matches.

Ibrahim, who was a regular for the Pahang II team in the MFL Cup, has been a regular for the Elephants in the last five matches.

The 23-year-old further cemented his reputation as one of the midfielders to watch in the country after producing a top-quality performance in the Malaysia Cup semi-finals against Sabah, in which his side won 3-2 on aggregate to qualify for the final.

But before making his mark this season, making 16 appearances in all competitions, Ibrahim was away from the sport for a while.

After completing his education at the Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School (SSTMI), he wasn’t selected by Pahang, so he took up e-hailing as a job, doing it for almost three years.

At the age of 21, he decided he wanted to go back to the game and went for selection to join the MFL Cup squad.

Ibrahim was selected and he has not looked back since.

“After school, I wasn’t picked for any team, so I decided to work and was away from the sport. Then one day I told my mother, I was tired of working and I loved the sport too much,” said Ibrahim.

“I went for a Pahang selection and got into the Under-23 squad and now I am part of the first team. It feels good to be in this team, especially the Malaysia Cup campaign.

“The second leg semi-final was unforgettable. I saw photos of fans queuing up to get tickets, and that is when I told myself, play for them and never stop running.”

Worked hard he did as Ibrahim was a constant thorn in midfield with his pressing and interceptions, which limited the tempo and movement of the Sabah midfielders. He was one of the shining lights in the second leg, helping the Elephants to win 2-1 and qualify for the final after 11 years.

“I want to thank the coaches, officials and fans for their support. I was nervous and scared but when I saw the crowd and was told by my teammates to just play my game, I did not look back.

“As for me always running and not showing an ounce of tiredness on the field, I guess that is my mentality. That mindset will ensure that I keep fighting for a spot in the team.

“I also want to thank my mother because she was there to support me when I played football and when I decided to return to the game after almost three years.”
