FAM suspends Kelantan FA over election irregularities

PETALING JAYA: The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has suspended the Kelantan Football Association (KAFA) effective immediately.

The FAM Executive Committee approved the action to suspend KAFA’s membership under Article 17 of the FAM Statutes, which empowers the committee to suspend any member's membership.

The suspension follows a letter dated Dec 21 from FAM to KAFA regarding the Internal Dispute Committee’s meeting outcome.

"This pertains to complaints about the handling of KAFA’s 65th Annual Congress and the Executive Committee elections for the 2024-2028 term," said the statement.

"The FAM Internal Dispute Committee, an ad hoc committee established by FAM under the direction of the Malaysian Sports Commissioner, convened on Thursday, Dec 19 and ruled that KAFA’s 65th Congress and the Executive Committee elections for the 2024-2028 term were invalid.

"This decision has been communicated to the Malaysian Sports Commissioner."

The ruling was based on findings that certain affiliate members were not allowed to attend or were not invited to the congress.

The procedures and handling of the KAFA Congress were deemed irregular and not in compliance with proper protocols.

As a result, FAM has directed KAFA to reconvene the congress and elections as soon as possible.
