Elephants rue meeting Red Giants so early in the Malaysia Cup

PETALING JAYA: Pahang coach Fandi Ahmad has admitted that they face an uphill task to avoid an early exit in the Malaysia Cup after they were drawn against Selangor in the round of 16 stage.

Fandi believed with the current performance of Selangor, who are second overall in the Super League, means Pahang players needs to double their work rate to have any chance of unseating the former champions.

Pahang will host Selangor at home on Nov 20 before the return leg takes place on Nov 29.

Selangor are the most successful team in Malaysia Cup history, having won 33 times but their last triumph was in 2015.

On the other hand, Pahang have lifted the Malaysia Cup four times with their last victory in 2014.

“It is a difficult route for Pahang in the Malaysia Cup this time. And to be drawn against an elite team like Selangor requires all the players to work hard and be ready to absorb the pressure.

“Players need to give their best, stay focused and confident in their own abilities to ensure victory for Pahang.

However, Fandi hopes the two-legged format of competition in use will give Pahang a chance to turn the odds in their favour.

“The return match format is also good for both teams compared to the knockout format previously.

“If we get a win in the opening leg, there is hope for us to ride on the momentum,” said Fandi, who will be banking on Kpah Sherman to lead the hunt for goals in the absence of the injured Stefano Brundo.
