PETALING JAYA: Selangor can’t wait to hit the ground running in their AFC Champions League Two campaign but they will need to tread with caution in their Group H opener against Thai club Muangthong United today.

The Red Giants can expect a loud reception at the Thunderdome Stadium in Nonthaburi but captain and centreback Safuwan Baharuddin hope they can at least steal a point from the tough clash.

“Playing an away game against a Thai side is always tough, so if we can get a draw it’ll be a good start,’’ said the Singaporean international.

“This is also my first time playing here and I’m aware it is one of the important stadiums in Thailand where the supporters will come in droves and support their team passionately.

‘’But we are thankful that some of our supporters will also be travelling to Thailand to cheer us on. We hope to repay their support with a good result.”

As for coach Nidzam Jamil, he is excited to make his debut as a coach in the competition.

“Selangor are returning to the continental stage after eight years, and that’s a big thing for me as a coach. I hope to make my debut in this competition a memorabe one.’’

He expects his side to be tested severely by Muangthong.

‘’They are one of the biggest teams in Thailand and we know what to expect.’’

Selangor will be missing midfielders Alex Agyarkwa and Mukhairi Ajmal as they are still undergoing rehabilitation for injuries.
