PETALING JAYA: Diminutive Brazilian Neto Oliveira is best described as a “pocket dynamite’ on the field.
The midfielder, who stands only 1.64m (5’3’’), has been the livewire for Penang this season with his superb vision, awareness and wonderful left-footed set-pieces.
And he showed his prowess again, being one of the match winners for the Panthers in their 2-0 win over Perak 2-0 in their Super League northern derby at the Perak Stadium in Ipoh on Saturday.
The 26-year-old Oliveira buried a free-kick in the 45th minute and dictated the tempo in midfield, creating many chances for the other attackers throughout the game.
Substitute striker Alif Ikmalrizal Anuar delivered the second goal when he finished off a flick from Brazilian striker Rodrigo Dias in the dying minutes of the match.
Penang jumped to seventh with six points, while Perak remained 11th with three points.
An elated Oliveira said: “I’m incredibly happy to have scored my first goal wearing this shirt. It’s a moment I’ve been eagerly anticipating, and I’m thrilled it has materialised,” he said.
“However, what truly matters is the victory we secured, which was absolutely crucial for the team’s success and our ongoing campaign.
“As for life in Penang, I’m adapting well, thank God.
‘‘It has been a smooth transition for me so far, and I am feeling more comfortable with each passing day.”
He hoped his team would continue to grow as one of the sides to watch out for this season.
“This championship is highly competitive, with every team bringing their best to each match. We must give our best to make our fans proud.
“I aim to contribute significantly with goals, assists, and better overall performances to ensure we maintain a high position in the league.’’
With their first win and a super energetic Oliveira running the show, expect Penang to be a tough side to beat this season.
