Safawi and Akhyar join Turtles on loan

Daring duo: Terengganu have secured the services of Akhyar Rashid (left) and Safawi Rasid for the 2024 season.

PETALING JAYA: Terengganu have finally confirmed the loan signings of wing wizards Safawi Rasid and Akhyar Rashid from Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) for the new season.

The Turtles made the announcement on social media with both the players being introduced via a video message and also a picture of them celebrating in Malaysian jersey colours.

Their signings have been mooted since December last year but clubs have not confirmed the deal, leaving fans on tenterhooks over their arrival.

Safawi, 26, and Akhyar, 24, have been eyed by coach Tomislav Steinbruckner for a while and getting those targets would surely be good news for the Croatian, who looks to mount a stronger challenge in the Super League.

Safawi is a known deal ball specialist and has worked under Steinbruckner, when he played for T-Team in 2015.

He will surely be the man to play as a right winger or playmaker as Steinbruckner will rely on him for goals and assists.

“It feels exciting to be back home, my home state. But I know it’s not going to be easy for me and I am not guaranteed a first eleven spot. I will work hard to get there,” he said.

“I also hope to use my experience playing with JDT and also clubs abroad like in Portugal and Thailand to help Terengganu get a good position in the league and also be challengers for trophies.”

As for Akhyar, he is brought in to replace Haitian winger Sony Norde on the left flank.

The former Kedah player is known for his superb dribbling and control and just like Safawi, he will be expected to deliver goals and assists.

“Terengganu are a team that perform consistently in the Super League and a giant to watch too. I saw their potential last season under coach Steinbruckner,” said Akhyar.

“When I found out that Tomislav was interested in signing me and that Terengganu were serious about getting my services, I was excited and wanted to grab the loan opportunity.

“I am aware that the competition in this team to grab a place is also fierce, but for me, I am used to it because the competition to get a place in JDT has proven to be quite intense and great. I just need to show my quality training and help Terengganu do well.”
