PETALING JAYA: Kedah’s star striker Ifedayo Olusegun has hit form at the right time before the team’s most important match of the season on Dec 2.
The battle for the second spot is heating up after third-placed Kedah closed the gap with Selangor by just two points, thanks to their 6-1 victory against Kelantan in a rain-soaked match at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium in Kota Baru on Sunday.
The Nigerian striker was the man-of-the-match for the Canaries when he scored four goals in the sixth, 27th, 30th and 81st minute – of which two were penalties. He now has 12 goals in the Super League since joining them in June.
Kedah will face their biggest test of the season when they take on Selangor at the Darulaman Stadium in Alor Setar on Dec 2 and Olusegun is looking forward to facing his former club.
“The assist from J. Partiban for the third goal was brilliant and from Jonathan Balotelli as well for my fourth. It was brilliant teamwork,” said the 32-year-old.
“I wanted to score as many goals as possible since joining Kedah, even told myself to score a goal per game.
“Now I’ve scored 12 goals in nine league matches, all thanks to God, my teammates and the coaching staff.”
The other goals for Kedah were scored by wingbacks Wan Amirul Afiq Wan Abdul Rahman (29th) and Ariff Farhan Isa (87th).
Kelantan’s lone goal was scored by Haziman Che Ngah in the 73rd minute.
“Next will be Selangor and they are in good shape. They have improved so much compared to the last few years,” said Olusegun.
“We know what it means to play against them at this crucial time. It’s one of the most important games of the season.
“Selangor have so many fantastic players that can change the course of the game individually and that makes them unpredictable.
“We have to be at our best to defeat Selangor. Everyone at the club knows that. The fans, too. I am expecting the stadium to be filled with our fans.”
