Selangor all ready to get tactical for Negri clash in FA Cup

PETALING JAYA: It will be a battle of wits where tactical prowess will make the difference.

That’s how Selangor coach Tan Cheng Hoe will approach his side’s FA Cup quarter-final clash with Negri Sembilan, who are led by K. Devan.

The former national coach lauded Devan for guiding the Deer to some impressive displays this season despite having very few foreign players.

Negri are doing fine with Singaporean midfielder Safuwan Baharuddin, Brazilian striker Casagrande and Gabonese playmaker Levy Madinda and Cheng Hoe is wary of Devan’s tactical organisation, which can frustrate the best of attacking teams.

“Negri have different strategies for different games, and this being a cup tie will be tricky. Devan has the experience to guide his players to get a result,’’ said Cheng Hoe.

“Our games against them are always close. In our recent game in the league, we needed a last-minute goal to beat them 2-1 in the league.

“They don’t have many import players, but Devan can bring out the best in them, especially in tactical organisation. He knows how to frustrate opponents.

“Eky (Shahrel Fikri Md Fauzi) is scoring goals now. Sikh Izhan (Sikh Nazrel Azman) is playing well in goal. Their midfield is good too. It will be a tough game for us.”

Shahrel knows a thing or two about the Red Giants, as he played for them for two seasons from 2021 to 2022.

Cheng Hoe is aware of his threat and reminded his boys to be on guard.

“We must keep our eyes on him and not give him too much space. One of Negri’s strengths is their set-pieces. Free kick or corner, they make good use of it.’’

Selangor, however, also boast a hitman in form – Colombian Ayron Del Valle, who has scored 10 goals in 12 matches.
