Sabah keeper Khairul wary of cat and mouse game in Kuching

Steady hands: Rhinos’ goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat is determined to keep a clean sheet against Kuching City.

PETALING JAYA: High-riding Sabah are expecting much more than a ‘catfight’ from Kuching City in their Super League match at the State Stadium in Kuching today.

The Rhinos have plundered seven goals after two straight wins, and Datuk Ong Kim Swee’s Borneo outfit are fancied to add to the tally against Kuching City, who are recovering from a 5-0 thrashing by Selangor.

But Sabah goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat isn’t expecting a straightforward tie with the Cats in their den.

He highlighted that this will be Sabah’s first away game and they should not throw caution to the wind.

“This will be our first away game. We have to be ready. Kuching lost to Selangor, but that’s not an indication of how they will play against us,’’ said the 34-year-old veteran.

“Our confidence is high after a good start, but it will still be a challenge playing in front of the Kuching City fans. We have to be solid for 90 minutes to win this.”

Khairul also said the disappointment of not keeping a clean sheet in their second game against Kelantan United (3-1) is spurring him to do even better in the coming games.

“Conceding a goal is a lesson to me. As a goalkeeper, I’ve got to keep my chin up and keep learning from my mistakes.’’
