Free agent Olusegun reveals his interest to carry on playing in Malaysia

PETALING JAYA: Goal machine Ifedayo Olusegun is footloose and fancy-free.

The 31-year-old forward, who scored 87 goals in 104 matches in all Malaysian League competitions, revealed that he is now a free agent and wants to continue his career in Malaysia.

Olusegun, who played for Melaka last season and scored seven goals in 12 matches, revealed that 2022 was a very difficult year for him.

“My time with Melaka was one to forget. The players were not paid their wages for months which greatly affected our performance,” said Olusegun, who had played for Selangor and Felda United.

“On top of that, I had to deal with the loss of my father.

“I decided to stay in Nigeria and be with my family.

“This year though, I’m looking forward to a new challenge. There are some clubs in Malaysia and abroad who have showed interest to sign me.

“After the bad experience with Melaka, I’m only considering clubs who are financially stable where one can fully focus on the game and not think when the next pay day will be.”

It is learnt that Selangor are keen to get him on board for the new season to partner their new signing from Colombia, Ayron Del Valle.

“Selangor have contacted me but there’s nothing concrete yet,” he said.

If Olusegun stays on in Malaysia, it will be his fifth consecutive season. This time he is aiming high. He does not only want to be a top scorer, but win a Cup too.

“I’ve always wanted to win a trophy in Malaysia. I hope soon, and maybe in 2023, I can do that.”

Olusegun is one of the top foreign players in the Malaysian League, thanks to his predatory instinct, essential to every striker.

His finishing is one of the best in the country which saw him bag the Super League Golden Boot award twice in a row (2020 and 2021) when he played for Selangor.

Whichever club that sign him can expect a flurry of goals and his customary “On God” celebration, where he covers his face while the other hand points to the sky.

The Super League will kick off on Feb 25 with the Charity Cup match between Johor Darul Ta’zim and Terengganu.
