Kagayama thriving on many roles for Rhinos

Kagayama: ‘Coach Ong (Kim Swee) can put me in any position and I will contribute something.’

PETALING JAYA: There’s a jack of all trades in Sabah’s attack whose versatility is a major influence on the Rhinos’ impressive run in the Super League.

Japanese playmaker Taiki Kagayama is that rare breed who can operate as a left or right winger, attacking midfielder and even striker.

And the 26-year-old doesn’t mind playing different roles in every game as long as he helps Sabah win.

“I’m game for any role in the attacking third. Coach Ong (Kim Swee) can put me in any position and I will contribute something,” said Kagayama.

“It also makes me a more complete player.’’

Kagayama has featured in 16 games in the Super League, scoring two goals and providing quite a number of assists.

His silky dribbling skills, neat ball distribution and intelligent runs have been vital to the Borneo side, who are now second in the standings with 35 points from 16 games.

Kagayama now hopes he can increase his goal tally and provide more assists to help the team maintain their form.

‘’We haven’t accomplished anything yet. So we must stay focused on every game that comes and see where we are at the end of the season.”

He added that Sabah’s inspired run in the league is a result of good teamwork and discipline.

‘’We all work hard, and every player strives to give his best for the team.’’
