Vales making his Marc as new leader of Canaries

PETALING JAYA: Kedah have been looking for a leader to steer the side since the departure of inspirational captain Baddrol Bakhtiar earlier this year.

And Marc Vales of Andorra seems to be the right fit.

There were several other seniors like winger Syazwan Zainon, goalkeeper Shahril Saari and playmaker Azamuddin Akil, but the team were screaming for a character that had the potential to guide and organise on the pitch.

International centreback Vales arrived three months ago but he suffered a knee injury which dented their defence and leadership.

Last week, though, Vales returned from injury and despite the Canaries’ 1-1 draw against Sabah at the Darulaman Stadium in Alor Setar on Aug 17, he shone with his leadership qualities.

And coach Aidil Sharin was quick to acknowledge it.

“Vales was great together with Akmal Zahir. He guided the youngsters throughout the game. He acted as the leader and ensured that we were on our toes throughout the game,” said the Singaporean.

“He did make one wrong pass against Sabah but other than that, Vales was brilliant.

“Imagine coming back after three months and being such an influential figure, credit must be given to him.

“We signed Vales for that reason. He is a leader and one who can grasp any tactics real quick. The young players perform better alongside him.

“We haven’t had a natural leader in the team this whole season, which is a problem for the team, and the character shown by Vales is what I wanted from the players.’’

Last season, Baddrol was supported by other strong leaders like Rizal Ghazali, Kpah Sherman and Renan Alves.

“Last year, I had a few who took up the leadership responsibility. I only have Vales now, but I hope others will step up.”

Kedah are seventh in the league with 18 points from 14 games.

They will be hoping for Vales to inspire them in the next eight games as they look to finish in a respectable position.

Kedah will next face Penang at the Darulaman Stadium on Sept 2.
