Sarawak hoping to continue winning streak under new coach

PETALING JAYA: Sarawak United are all pumped up after a three-week break.

Fresh from the breather, the Golden Rhinos are eyeing their first scalp when they take on Kedah in their Super League encounter at the Darulaman Stadium today.

Before the break, they had beaten Melaka 3-2 and hoped to continue that momentum under their new coach S. Balachandran.

Kedah, on the other hand, have lost their last two games against Terengganu. They lost 0-1 in the FA Cup second round on July 6 and 0-2 in the Super League on July 15.

While happy with their own preparation, Sarawak’s Nigerian striker Uche Agba does not want to underestimate the Canaries, especially when they play at home.

“Kedah are a good side and are playing in the AFC Cup. They have a very good coach (Aidil Sharin) as well,” said the 35-year-old.

“They play as a team, but as every other team, they can concede despite being a good side.

“We have to respect them and be very disciplined to get a good result.”

Sarawak are 10th in the top division with 10 points from 11 matches while Kedah are seventh with 14 points from 10 games.

Agba admitted that it had not been easy on the team after changing three coaches in one season.

Earlier this year, E. Elavarasan left the coaching gig to join the national team as an assistant coach while B. Sathianathan had to leave his post due to health issues.

“We have a third handler within a season ... it is not so easy for everyone to adapt to these changes,” said Agba.

“But we are giving our best considering what we have and the situation we are in.

This season, Agba has missed out on some games due to injuries, but he is now fully fit and looks to strike up a good partnership with Togolese striker Francis Kone, who has scored three goals for the club this season.

“Kone is a good player who works very hard.

“We may have a different style of play, but the important thing is to fight for the points.

“We keep improving individually and collectively as a team.”
