PETALING JAYA: Singaporean legend Fandi Ahmad (pic) could be the next coach for Pahang.
It is learnt that Frenchman Christoph Gamel, who has been under fire of late for the Elephants’ poor results in the Super League, has left the team.
“Gamel‘s time is over, and a replacement has been found. It could be a Singaporean,” revealed a source.
“He is expected to coach the team when they take on Penang in the FA Cup (July 23). For now, Dollah Salleh is training the boys.”
Fandi will no doubt be a good choice to helm struggling Pahang, who are second from bottom in the Super League.
The 60-year-old is also a former idol of the Elephants as he inspired them to win the Semi-Pro League and FA Cup in 1992.
Fandi also played for Kuala Lumpur from 1986 to 1989, where he won the league in 1988 and the Malaysia Cup in 1987, ’88 and ’89.
As a coach, he led Lions XII to the FA Cup in 2015.
In Singapore, he guided Singapore Armed Forces to S-League titles in 2000 and 2002.
Fandi has 101 caps with Singapore, scoring 55 goals and was also the first Singaporean to play in Europe when he featured for Dutch club Groningen from 1983 to 1985.
