Elavarasan glad reserves show guts to fight on

PETALING JAYA: Strength in depth is needed to sustain a strong challenge in the Malaysia Cup and Sarawak United are glad that their reserves are stepping up to the plate.

Coach E. Elavarasan (pic) is excited to see the overall strength of his squad in the Cup campaign as they currently top Group A with six points thanks to their victories over Penang (3-1) and Pahang (1-0).

The absence of goalkeeper Sharbinee Allawee, centreback Mohd Amer Saidin and fullback Badrul Affendy Mohd Fadzli, all serving suspensions, have surprisingly not affected the Crocs’ performance.

“Besides the tactical change, I’m satisfied with the commitment shown especially those who have taken over the positions of our key players,” said Elavarasan.

“Khair Jones (fullback), Stuart Wark (centreback) and Shaiful Wazizi (goalkeeper) have shown their experience to keep the backline tight.

“I hope this continues because it would greatly boost our confidence for the rest of the competition.”

Amer will be available for the game against Kuala Lumpur at the Cheras Football Stadium on Oct 30 while Badrul will only be available for the return leg on Nov 3.

Sharbinee will miss both matches and is due to return when they travel to Pahang on Nov 7.

They were suspended for misconduct and unsportsmanlike behaviour against an opposing player and referee in the Premier League match against Negri Sembilan on Sept 10.

Elavarasan is currently busy preparing his boys mentally and physically for the rest of the group matches.

“All the teams in the group would have done their homework. They now know our strengths and weaknesses because during the one-month international break, there will be differences in performances.”
