PETALING JAYA: The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) are happy with how the M-League have responded to a FIFA circular on salary cuts and are willing to extend their deadline to enable an amicable solution.
FAM secretary-general Stuart Ramalingam revealed that half of the 24 teams in the M-League have agreed to terms with their players while the remaining half need more time to fine-tune the details of the agreements with their players.
“I have been in touch with the teams and most players have agreed to the pay cuts and it’s a very positive sign but there are teams who need more time to reach an agreement. It’s not because they are reluctant to negotiate, they need more time to sort out some of the finer details,” said Stuart.
“If the teams need an extension of two or three days to get their negotiation completed, we are willing to cooperate because we want the discussion with the players and the teams to happen without any coercion.”
Last month, FIFA issued a circular regarding the expiry and commencement of player contracts, football employment agreements that can no longer be performed and the transfer window.
The FAM have advocated for the teams to negotiate directly with the players and technical officials to come to an agreement before today.
If the parties failed to reach an amicable solution by today, they may take the matter to the FAM. But the FAM are willing to give both teams and players a few more days.
“It brings us great comfort to see the teams and players willing to work out a deal among themselves in good faith. We don’t want any unilateral decision made on this matter. It seems everything is going well,” said Stuart.
