PETALING JAYA: Felda United know how it is to fight for your life. They were involved in a mighty relegation scrap last season before finally escaping by finishing 10th in the 12-team league last season.

Their new skipper Jasazrin Jamaluddin believes that relegation battle has only galvanised the team for the 2020 season.

The midfielder was handed the armband after their talisman Hadin Azman left the Fighters to join FA Cup winners Kedah this season.

The 33-year-old said he would need the help of his foreign teammates – Singaporean striker Khairul Amri, Serbian defender Nikola Raspopovic, Gabonese attacking midfielder Frederic Bulot, Japanese winger Ryutaro Megumi and Argentinian striker Nicolas Velez – to guide the younger players in the team.

“It’s a huge responsibility to lead the team and to be a role model on and off-field ... I really hope I can repay the faith given to me by the management,” said the Batu Pahat local.

“I filled in as skipper last season when Hadin was not available, so I’m used to the responsibility and I think the experience we gained fighting relegation has only strengthened us ... we know how to handle pressure better.”

“I expect our imports to be role models for the younger players as well, they surely can share their experience with the youngsters in the team.”

Last season, Felda managed to reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup but failed to get past the group stage of the Malaysia Cup.

For the 2020 season, Jasazrin said he has set a target to finish in the top five in the Super League and to win either the FA Cup or the Malaysia Cup.

He added that the team’s 10 week-long pre-season training has put them in good stead compared to last season when they struggled with injuries, especially to imports.

“This season we have better depth ... our imports are looking good, while the new local boys are rearing to prove themselves,” said the former Johor Darul Ta’zim player.
