Megumi sees a sunny future for Felda

PETALING JAYA: Ryutaro Megumi, from the Land of the Rising Sun, sees a new dawn for himself and his team Felda United in the Malaysian Super League.

The Japanese winger, who blazed the wings for Tampines Rovers in the Singapore League (S-League) for three years, will now look to emulate those performances for Felda in the Super League.

The 26-year-old, known for his workrate and individual skills, came highly recommended by former teammate Khairul Amri, and coach Nidzam Jamil decided to pair them both again in Malaysia.

When he was on the other side of the causeway, the 1.72m player used to watch some M-League games and was fascinated with the end-to-end play at times.

“After my term in Tampines ended, I always thought of playing in the Malaysian Super League. Felda offered, and I was interested,” said the player, who used to feature in the Kanto Soccer League, a semi-professional league in Japan.

“I am thrilled to be part of this team. They have a proper stadium in Jengka, so I am looking forward to playing there in front of the fans.

“The pitch is no problem because I have played on artificial surfaces in Singapore. I want to do my best for this club.”

Megumi is no stranger to Felda United, as he used to play against them in the 2017 AFC Cup.

“Also, I have played against reigning Super League champions Johor Darul Ta’zim in the AFC Cup. These teams are strong and have done well in the continental stage.

“I am here to improve my performances, and help them do well in the league.”

The prospect of playing alongside his former teammate Khairul is undoubtedly enticing, as he looks to spice up the league with their scintillating combination plays.

The duo were certainly frightening in the Singapore League with a combination that saw 57 goals from 2017 to 2019 for the Singaporean club.

“I have never lived in Malaysia, so having him is very reassuring. As for football, we have played together for almost three years.

“I know how he wants to play. I want to create many chances and goals with him. That is my aim for my debut season in Malaysia.”

For the new season, Nidzam has so far reinforced his team with Argentine striker Nicholas Velez, Serbian defender Nikola Raspopovic, defender Ariff Farhan Isa, Osman Yusoff and Ezanie Salleh, goalkeeper Zarif Irfan Hashimuddin and midfielder Fadhil Idris.
