PETALING JAYA: After five years, Nicholas Swirad believes that he has finally made the right move in the Super League.

The centreback will don the Selangor jersey next season after plying his trade with the now-defunct PKNS since 2014.

Swirad, who is of English-Malaysian heritage, equated Selangor to his favourite hometown club Manchester United – in some aspects.

“They have similar history like United. They have won so many trophies throughout the years. But of late, that reputation has not been translated into winning Cups, almost similar to United too, ” quipped the 28-year-old.

“It’s a real privilege to join a club of such stature.

“Over the years, I’ve built my way up to get into this position. I had some interests, but looking at Selangor now, I know this is the right move.

“Coach is good, and the atmosphere so far has been warm, ” said Swirad, who started his training session with the Red Giants under coach B. Sathianathan on Dec 10.

Selangor signed Swirad after he impressed them in the team’s 1-0 victory over Singapore in the Sultan of Selangor’s Cup in August.

He was one of three PKNS players selected for the game with the other two being Rodney Calvin Akwensivie, who has also joined him in Selangor, and Romel Morales, who is now with Melaka.

In last season’s Super League, Swirad played 23 matches in all competitions and scored three goals.

He could have played more if not for his groin injury, which hampered his steady progress last season.

Even though PKNS had a poor outing this year, the versatile Swirad stood out and vows to stick to his work ethics and dedication with Selangor.

“I want to take things day-by-day and do my best for the club, ” he said.

“In my opinion, Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) are miles ahead, but Selangor are trying to regain their glory days.”
