SHAH ALAM: Premier League champions Police continued their fine form in the Malaysia Cup with a comfortable 2-0 win over 10-man Selangor in their Group D clash at the Shah Alam Stadium.
It was Police’s second win, putting them on top of the group with six points. The Red Giants dropped to third on three points, courtesy of their opening 2-1 win over T-Team.
T-Team moved up to second after a 2-1 triumph over winless Sime Darby at the Sultan Ismail Stadium in Kuala Terengganu.
Selangor, the 32-time Malaysia Cup winners, were reduced to 10 men last night after skipper Mohd Bunyamin Umar was sent off for scything down Police’s Ashfaq Ali in the box in the 12th minute. The nippy Maldivian picked himself put to convert from the spot for his third goal in the competition.
The Red Giants tried to claw their way back into the game, but they could not find the breakthrough as their Brazilian hotshot striker Paulo Rangel was fighting the battle alone up front.
Substitute Charles Souza Chad put the game beyond Selangor’s reach by scoring in the 68th minute.
In Group B, Perak maintained their unbeaten run by beating Sarawak 2-0 at the Perak Stadium in Ipoh.
Skipper Mohd Nasir Basharuddin (44th) and Nigerian striker Abdulafees Abdulsalam (58th) scored to put Perak on top of the group with the maximum six points.
Terengganu secured a vital win, their first in this year’s competition, when they edged winless Kedah 3-2 at the Darulaman Stadium in Alor Setar to move up to second in the group.
Australian midfielder Mario Karlovic was the Turtles’ hero, scoring the winner in the 74th minute.
Earlier, Ashaari Shamsuddin had given Terengganu the lead with a brace in the eighth and 44th minutes. But Billy Mehmet (45th) and Baddrol Bakhtiar (60th) drew level for Kedah.
