Azizulhasni falls short of keirin semi-finals in Shanghai

PETALING JAYA: National track cycling star Azizulhasni Awang came up short in his bid to win his first World Championship medal in six years after he failed to reach the keirin semi-finals at the Shanghai Velodrome on Thursday (Oct 15).

The newly crowned Asian Games and Commonwealth Games keirin champion was forced to cut short his campaign after finishing last in Heat 3 of the quarter-finals stage.

Only the top four riders progressed to the semi-final from each of the three heats, thus ending his hopes of making it to the podium in his pet event.

Azizul had earlier advanced to the quarter-finals stage after finishing second behind Asian Games sprint champion Kaiya Ota in his first round heat.

Azizul's only hope of adding to his career tally of seven World Championship medals lies in the individual sprint event on Saturday.
