PETALING JAYA: Track cyclist Azizulhasni Awang knows his recent statements may anger certain quarters, but he is prepared to face the backlash.
Azizul spoke out over what he described as the unprofessional handling of his future with the national team.
In a lengthy statement posted on his Instagram account, the 38-year-old said he felt compelled to speak after repeatedly seeking a clear answer from the Youth and Sports Ministry and National Sports Council (NSC) on whether they genuinely wanted him to continue towards the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Azizul added he had remained silent for as long as possible because he preferred to concentrate on training but the lack of a decision had gone on for too long.
He said 66 days had passed since a June 23 meeting in which he and national cycling team technical director John Beasley had explained the Olympic qualification process and the challenges facing Malaysian track cycling.
"For me, the ministry and NSC have been less professional and less efficient in allowing this matter to drag on.
"I did not want matters to reach this stage and would much rather have remained silent and focused only on training," said the five-time Olympian, who questioned the experience and competence of those entrusted with leading Malaysian sport.
"I also hope that the government will no longer appoint someone without experience to become a major leader in an organisation," he said.
"The consequences are significant at grassroots level and result in major losses for the country.
"I know my statement will anger certain parties but those who frequently deal with me know that I am straightforward for the good of everyone.
"This would not have happened if it had been handled professionally and efficiently at an early stage. I am simply waiting for all the armies that will be deployed to fight me.
"I am not afraid because I know I am on the right side.
"Not many athletes have the courage to speak out to protect their welfare.
"I hope the statement and the major risk I am taking will change the landscape of Malaysian sport and that all athletes in Malaysia will always be protected and given the best in the future."
