Fatehah loses race for sprint bronze controversially

Fatehah Mustapa was beaten to the bronze in the women's sprint by England's Jess Varnish.

GLASGOW: National cyclist Fatehah Mustapa was fuming after losing in the bronze medal playoff in the women’s sprint event at Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.

Although Fatehah beat Jess Varnish of England in the first of the three races to determine the bronze medal winner, the Malaysian was relegated instead.

She was adjudged to have failed to hold her line in the last 200m and the first win was awarded to Varnish.

As both cyclists were manoeuvring at the last bend, Fatehah claimed that a slight knock from Varnish forced her to fall out of her lane.

The cycling commissaries, however, said that she had gone off her line and punished her by relegating her to second spot.

It naturally affected Fatehah and she lost the plot in the second race – giving way for Varnish to take home the bronze medal.

It was the Malaysian’s last chance of winning a medal in the track event. Unfortunately, she lost it in controversial fashion.

In the gold medal playoff, Stephanie Morton defeated Anna Meares for the gold in an all-Australian final.
