PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s national men’s cricketers were given a rare masterclass when legends Sir Vivian Richards and former India head coach Ravi Shastri shared their insights during a special meet session on Tuesday.
West Indies batting great Richards stressed that discipline, respect and character are the pillars of sustained success in high-performance cricket above raw talent.
“As long as you respect the game, your teammates and your opponents, and you work hard, hard work will always pay,” said Richards.
“Talent is important, but character is what keeps you going through the ups and downs.
“It’s never a bad day if you learn something. There is information even in defeat. If you don’t learn from loss, you shouldn’t be playing.”
Richards, who redefined aggressive battling by doing so without a helmet against the fastest bowlers in the world during his time, added that players need to prepare beyond structured training environments.
“Don’t wait only for your coach or trainer. Preparation can happen anywhere – even in your room. When opportunity comes, you must be ready,” he said.
Meanwhile, Shastri, recognised as the voice of cricket commentary before going on to serve as India’s head coach, spoke on the critical role of belief and mindset when competing at the highest level.
“If you believe in your own ability and compete fearlessly, you can challenge any opposition. You may not always have the same experience, but belief can bridge that gap,” he said.
Shastri added that global platforms are crucial for players to gain visibility and exposure.
“One good inning on television can change your life. Exposure is everything in today’s game,” he noted.
The Malaysian Cricket Association welcomed the meaningful engagement and reiterated their commitment to creating pathways for the national players to compete in global leagues in the future.
