PETALING JAYA: Melaka Based MBC Basketball Club continue to produce top players for the national team.

Two of the club's top stars Jayson Lee and Matthew Chin were selected for the SEA Games in Thailand from Dec 9-20.

Jayson and Matthew will be in the team competing in the 5x5 event in the biennial Games.

"Jayson and Matthew, who are both from MBC, were among the players selected for the SEA Games," said MBC general manager Kwaan Yoong Chye.

"They are currently training with the national team. We are proud to have players from our club chosen to represent the country.

"We always try to produce talent and help them to reach a higher level and break into the national team."

MBC's success in senior level is helped by the strength of their Under-20 squad.

MBC have captured the Under-23 D-League title for the past two years and are the hot favourites to extend their streak this year.

The club's bid for a third consecutive title was boosted after receiving RM30,000 cash sponsorship from property company Gplex Realty.

Yoong Chye was thankful for the funding as it was invaluable to the development of the team.

"This sponsorship is really helpful for us as we are based in Melaka and need funds to travel and compete in tournaments which are mostly held in the Klang Valley," said Yoong Chye.

"Compared to individual sports, our expenses are higher too. So, with the support from Gplex Realty, we hope to win a third D-League title which has never been before."

Meanwhile, Gplex Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ron Ong hopes their support will help increase the popularity of basketball in Malaysia and encourage more youngsters to take up the sport.

"Basketball is fairly popular in Malaysia but is often neglected compared to sports like badminton and Gplex hopes to play a part in broadening its appeal in the country," said Ron.

"Promoting sports, teamwork, a sense of belonging and purpose amongst youngsters is also increasingly important, particularly at a time when we are witnessing a rise in issues in schools.

"Hopefully, the development of sports can inspire more youngsters to channel their energy and focus on healthier activities."
