New basketball stadium ready soon

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian basketball team will soon have a new place to call home.

The Arena Seremban, currently under construction, is a five-in-one multi-purpose building which consists of an indoor stadium, office tower, hotel, condominium and commercial shoplots. It is expected to be completed by the end of 2023 while the indoor arena will be playable in the first quarter of 2024.

“The reason we are building Arena Seremban is we want a venue with a 3,000 capacity so that we can host international basketball tournaments. Our current home, the Maba Stadium, can only accommodate 1,800 spectators,” said Malaysia Basketball Association (Maba) president Datuk Seri Lee Tian Hock.

Maba are also looking at organising basketball matches at the venue when Malaysia host the SEA Games in 2027.

“I want to propose for matches to be played at the Arena Seremban because right now, I think there is only one stadium which has a 3,000 capacity,” explained Tian Hock.

Meanwhile, the Maba Stadium built in 1995 and located in Jalan Hang Jebat, Kuala Lumpur will be redeveloped.

“Work will start soon but I think the project could not be completed by 2027. If it is completed earlier, then we will have two locations to host basketball matches during the SEA Games,” he added.
