SHAH ALAM: An enthusiastic crowd can be the difference between a win and loss for an athlete.
However, the cramped facilities at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) will make it difficult for Federal Territory men’s doubles shuttler Bryan Jeremy Goonting in his medal pursuit.
The 21-year-old will be partnering Low Han Chen for both the team and individual doubles events at the Setia City Convention Centre, and the allocated audience space has fallen short of the players’ expectations.
“Compared to the previous two Games, the venue this time is underwhelming,” said Bryan.
“There is not much space for supporters. So the overall vibe is off.”
Bryan, who won bronze at the Kuching Games in 2024 with partner Fazriq Razif, is determined not to let the lack of fanfare dampen his medal hopes.
“There’s no choice so we just have to get used to it.”
Fortunately, Bryan and Han Chen, 20, possess an inherent chemistry stemming from their years of friendship both on and off the courts.
“We’ve known each other since I was eight,” he said.
“We’re enemies on the court when we play against each other.
“But when we play together, we’re the best.”
The duo partnered each other in their maiden Games back in 2022, but were knocked out in the quarter-finals.
With four years of experience under their belts, Bryan is confident they’ll bring a medal back this time.
They are on the right course as they beat Toh E Hern and Wee Yee Tern 21-18, 21-10 in the men’s team event to help Federal Territory overcome Johor 3-2 in a tough second round fight yesterday.
Their individual men’s doubles event will take place from Aug 21-24.
