Top 30 breakthrough by Letshanaa, Ling Ching would be best gift for Jonassen

PETALING JAYA: Seeing women's singles shuttlers, K. Letshanaa and Wong Ling Ching break into the world top 30 by the end of the year would be the best gift he could ask for, says national singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen.

Based on the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings released on May 19, Letshanaa moved up one spot to world No. 32, while Ling Ching is just one rung below her at No. 33.

This means both players are now in contention to compete in higher-tier tournaments such as Super 750 and Super 1000 events.

Jonassen said he would be happy if both players are eager to improve their rankings and are prepared to work hard to achieve their goals.

”What makes me happy is helping the players live out their potential and dreams. That is what drives me. So when they have goals, it’s my job to help them try to achieve those goals,” he said.

However, for now, the coaching team have yet to set any official targets for the two players and will only sit down for discussions after the Indonesian Open from June 2-7.

"We'll take it step by step as we can't suddenly think we can walk on water because beating one player in the top 10 does not make us top 10 yet. It is a long-term process,” added Jonassen.
