Chong Wei stands firm despite some players' complaints to BAM chief

Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei and BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.

PETALING JAYA: Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) performance committee chairman Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei revealed that several players had been unhappy with the stricter rules reintroduced in the national squad since his return to the governing body.

Chong Wei said some players had even met BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz to complain about the action taken against them.

However, the former world No. 1 did not reveal the identities of the players involved.

He stressed that a firm approach was necessary following repeated complaints from various parties, including the coaching staff, over disciplinary issues involving players.

“Maybe many are uncomfortable now because we have a new management and a lot of things have become stricter.

“I know the past few months have not been easy. Some people are unhappy, some have complained and some players have even met the president. It’s okay, we will continue with what we are doing,” said Chong Wei.

He added that he was not worried as all the measures introduced had received full backing from Tengku Zafrul.

Disciplinary issues involving national badminton players have become a growing concern, with BAM now tightening existing regulations again, including requiring all unmarried players to stay at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) hostel in Bukit Kiara.

Should the disciplinary problems continue, the players involved could face suspension from international tournaments.
