Joo-bong: It’s go from the first point under 15x3

PETALING JAYA: There may be no time to take a breather if the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) proposal to introduce a new 15x3 scoring format gets the thumbs up.

The world body are set to decide on the new system during their Annual General Meeting today, held during the ongoing Thomas and Uber Cup Finals in Horsens, Denmark.

South Korea head coach Park Joo-bong believes all signs point towards a change.

“I prefer the 21x3 scoring format, but I think the world body are determined to introduce the new one,” said Joo-bong.

“The game will evolve into a faster format.

“A player has to be on his toes from the first point ... it will be difficult to catch up once a player takes the lead. It’s go from the first point.”

The format has been tested at several Grade Three tournaments and the World Junior Championships, but has yet to be used in top-tier events.

Research by the BWF shows that the 15x3 format could make matches more exciting and competitive, allowing faster progress to critical points and leading to shorter, more predictable durations.

The governing body added that fewer points could improve scheduling, tournament flow and broadcast consistency, while also supporting player recovery and reducing fatigue.
