PETALING JAYA: Service errors and a lack of clear communication cost mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei dearly after they crashed out in the first round of the All-England.

World champions Tang Jie-Ee Wei, who entered the tournament as the fourth seeds, suffered a major blow when they fell to Denmark’s Rasmus Espersen-Amalie Kudsk in a hard-fought 62-minute battle at the Arena Birmingham.

Ee Wei personally apologised to fans for failing to live up to expectations and felt that the frequent service faults called against her were among the main reasons for the defeat.

The calls disrupted her focus and confidence, while the tactics they employed against Espersen and Kudsk appeared to hand the initiative to their opponents to launch attacks.

“I think we lifted the shuttle too often and that left us in uncomfortable positions on court. That is one of the areas we need to improve before the next tournament.

“I made too many service errors and that affected my confidence. At crucial points, I also made a few mistakes because I was worried about committing another service fault,” said Ee Wei in a post match interview with the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

Tang Jie, meanwhile, felt that their communication during the match was not smooth, which led to confusion in court positioning and ultimately contributed to the loss.

“I think our communication on court, especially regarding positional switches, needs to improve.

“We have to communicate more so that our game plan is clearer and more organised. That is one of the lessons we must take from this match,” added Tang Jie.

Since making their All-England debut together in 2023, Tang Jie-Ee Wei have struggled to get past the early rounds.

Their best showing came in the 2024 edition, where they advanced to the second round before falling to Holland’s Robin Tabeling-Selena Piek.

At the same time, two other Malaysian mixed doubles pairs also bowed out in the opening round.

Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin lost 17-21, 19-21 to India’s Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto.

Professional pair Jimmy Wong-Lai Pei Jing were again left disappointed after going down 17-21, 18-21 to Taiwan’s Ye Hong-wei-Nicole Chan.
