BWF to decide on 3x15 scoring system on April 25

PETALING JAYA: All eyes will be on the Badminton World Federation (BWF) on April 25 as they will decide on the proposed 3x15 scoring system.

BWF will make the final call when all council members cast their votes at the annual general meeting during the Thomas-Uber Cup Finals in Horsens, Denmark.

Previously, the BWF council, in their Nov 8 meeting last year, agreed that the 15-point format offers the best balance in terms of match excitement, competitive fairness and player welfare.

The system has already been tested in several national tournaments as well as grade three events and was also implemented at the 2025 World Junior Championships.

Based on their findings, BWF observed that the format delivers more exciting and competitive matches as game duration is reduced.

It also found that matches reach critical points faster, resulting in shorter and more predictable durations.

The reduced number of points helps improve scheduling, tournament flow and broadcast consistency while supporting player recovery and reducing fatigue.

BWF president Patama Leeswadtrakul is looking forward to presenting the proposal for the 3x15 scoring system in April.

"After extensive testing and consultation, we believe the 3x15 scoring system provides a strong foundation for the sport’s future.

"It supports player welfare, keeps matches dynamic and engaging for global audiences, and helps badminton stand out in an increasingly fast paced entertainment landscape.

"This approach reflects our commitment to long term sustainability and innovation, and our continued support for players in their pursuit of excellence, enabling them to enjoy longer, more successful careers in the sport," Leeswadtrakul added.
