Cruel end for Jin Wei as exhaustion ends title hopes in Thailand Masters final

PETALING JAYA: Women’s singles shuttler Goh Jin Wei’s hopes of ending her wait for an Open title was cruelly dashed after she was forced to retire during the Thailand Masters final against India’s Devika Sihag.

Jin Wei was trailing 8-21, 3-6 when she had to throw in the towel after slipping while trying to retrieve the shuttle during a rally at the Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok on Sunday (Feb 1).

It was a heartbreaking end for the 26-year-old, who was hoping to get it right this time after three runners-up finishes in the 2016 Indonesian Masters, 2017 Taiwan Open and 2022 Vietnam Open.

Jin Wei though can be proud of her efforts after struggling for form and fitness for the past two years.
