BANGKOK: What a welcome for the new Youth and Sports Minister Dr Taufiq Johari!

On the day he reported for duty, Malaysia raked in their biggest haul of gold medals on a single day and a raft of silver and bronze, including a historic silver by paddlers, at the Thailand SEA Games on Wednesday (Dec 17).

Malaysia won 11 gold medals through muay thai (three), squash (two), pencak silat (two), shooting (one), e-sports (one), cricket and netball to make 41 in total after eight days.

And the gold rush took the country's total tally to 193 - just seven short of the 200-medal target.

They should be able to hit the target today with hockey, cycling, and several other sports set to roll out.
