Ee Wei, Su Yin on standby as squad aim to strengthen doubles line-up

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia women’s doubles head coach Rosman Razak is prepared to turn to either mixed doubles world champion Toh Ee Wei or Cheng Su Yin to reinforce the women’s doubles line-up for the Thailand SEA Games team competition starting tomorrow at Thammasat University in Pathum Thani.

The move is being considered as the coaching team continue to monitor Go Pei Kee’s condition after she was recently reported to be down with a fever.

Moreover, she is only just recovering from the ankle injury she picked up at the French Open in late October while playing with her partner Teoh Mei Xing.

Rosman said Ee Wei or Su Yin had valuable experience competing in women’s doubles and can step in if needed to support the top pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah.

There are risks, though, as Su Yin last featured in the event two years ago with her twin sister Cheng Su Hui, while Ee Wei has been away from the discipline longer as her last outing came during her junior days with Pearly.

“Anything is possible. Over these two days we will assess their condition. For now, Pei Kee and Mei Xing are fine. The previous injury is improving and that is very positive. But the final decision will be made before the match.

“If we have to make changes, then we will in order to field the strongest team on that day,” said Rosman when met at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) before the team departed for Bangkok yesterday.

In addition to the doubles specialists, the women’s team this time also includes four singles players, namely K. Letshanaa, Wong Ling Ching, Siti Zulaikha Azmi and Eng Ler Qi.

The men’s and women’s team draws will take place today.
