Wee Kiong-Azriyn stun world No. 1 pair to reach Denmark Open quarters

PETALING JAYA: Seasoned men’s doubles pair Tan Wee Kiong-Nur Azriyn Ayub showed they still have plenty of sting after pulling off a stunning upset over world No. 1 Kim Won-ho-Seong Seung-jae, winning 21-19, 21-14 in the second round of the Denmark Open on Thursday (Oct 16).

The experienced duo needed just 36 minutes to wrap up the victory and book their spot in the quarter-finals.

Wee Kiong and Azriyn will next face the winners of the clash between China’s Liang Weikeng-Wang Chang and Indonesia’s Sabar Karyaman Gutama-Reza Pahlevi Isfahani.

Joining them in the last eight were mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie, who overcame Japan’s Yuichi Shimogami-Sayaka Hobara 21-13, 21-18.

They will meet either compatriots Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei or China’s Gao Jiaxuan-Wu Mengying in the quarter-finals.
