Wei Xiang powers Malaysia to bright start at world juniors in India


PETALING JAYA: Malaysian shuttlers got off to a good start at the World Junior Championships by clearing the first round in Assam, Guwahati, India, yesterday.

In the boys’ singles camp, Kong Wei Xiang (pic) made quick work of Canada’s Asher Bedi to win 15-12, 15-9 in just 24 minutes.

Ayu Fu Sheng also made his way into the second round after beating Taiwan’s Huang Jyun-kai 15-11, 14-16, 15-12.

Girls’ singles player Carine Tee was swift in knocking out Slovakia’s Ella Eliaskova as she only needed 18 minutes to win 15-8, 15-9.

She will be joined in the second round by compatriot Eng Ler Qi, who needed even less time in her opening match, defeating England’s Aahna Bhatia 15–1, 15–5 in just 16 minutes.

Oo Shan Zi also booked her spot in the second round after winning 15-11, 15-7 against Romania’s Denisa-Maria Muscalu.

In the mixed doubles category, the duo of Irfan Mohd Shazmir and Teh Si Yan were quick in their 16-14, 15-8 win against Aditya Menon-Vaidehi Kalidasan of the United Arab Emirates in 16 minutes.
