Liek Hou, Fareez seal early spots in Paralympics semi-final


Shuttler Cheah Liek Hou is through to the semi-finals of the Paris Paralympics.

PETALING JAYA: Shuttlers Cheah Liek Hou and Fareez Anuar have both qualified for the men's singles SU5 (upper body impairment) semi-finals of the Paris Paralympics with one match to spare.

Fareez stole the show when he pulled off a sensational 14-21, 21-19, 21-19 win over Indonesia's 2021 Tokyo Games silver medallist and reigning Asian Para Games champion Dheva Anrimusthi in Group B at the Port de la Chapelle in Adidas Arena on Friday (Aug 30).

It was the former's second win in the group after he beat Taiwan's Fang Jen-yu 21-14, 21-18 a day earlier.

Faeez will next play Japan's Taiyo Imai and another win will see him finish top of the group with qualification for the last four already secured.

Defending champion Liek Hou will join Fareez in the semi-final after sweeping aside Frenchman Meril Loquette 21-10, 21-16 in Group A.

The 36-year-old beat Poland's Bartlomiej Mroz 21-10, 21-6 in his opening group match and will next take on Indonesia's Suryo Nugroho in the decider for top spot.
