Upset win by Pearly-Thinaah

PETALING JAYA: Commonwealth Games champions Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah pulled off an upset win over world No. 3 Lee So-hee-Shin Cheung-chan of South Korea to storm into the women's doubles second round at the Japan Open in Osaka on Tuesday (Aug 30).

The unseeded Pearly-Thinaah defeated So-hee-Seung-chan, the third seeds, 16-21, 21-14, 21-18 in a 61-minute battle in the first round.

The victory was a boost for Pearly-Thinaah, who lost in the third round of the World Championships in Tokyo last week.

Meanwhile, men's doubles Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani ended their campaign in the first round after losing 21-17, 18-21, 21-19 to All England champions Shohibul Fikri-Bagas Maulana of Indonesia.

Sze Fei-Izzuddin lost to newly crowned world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in the third round of the world meet last week.
