Sweet success in Swiss Open as Vivian-Chiew Sien reach first semis

Nur Izzuddin Rumsani (back) and Goh Sze Fei made it to the Swiss Open semis.

PETALING JAYA: Independent shuttlers Vivian Hoo-Lim Chiew Sien were jumping for joy in Swiss Open after reaching their first semi-finals.

Vivian-Chiew Sien upstaged world No. 20 Ashwini Ponnappa-Reddy Sikki of India 22-20, 23-21 in the quarter-finals in Basel.

World No. 44 Vivian-Chiew Sien, who have been playing together only since the Dutch Open last year, showed their determination to beat their opponents in their first meeting on the international stage.

The Malaysian duo had crashed out in the quarter-finals of the Indian and German Opens recently. The Swiss Open was their 11th tournament together.

Anna Cheong-Teoh Mei Xing failed to join their seniors after losing 18-21,18-21 to Germany's Linda Efler-Isabel Lohau in the last eight.

A day after stunning former world No. 1 Saina Nehwal of India, S. Kisona slumped to a 11-21, 12-21 defeat to Supanida Katethong of Thailand in just 39 minutes.

In the men's doubles, Malaysia's Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani (pix) made it to the last four after defeating Mark Lamsfuss-Marvin Seidel of Germany 21-11, 21-13 and Leo Rolly-Daniel Marthin of Indonesia 21-18, 19-21, 21-12 respectively to enter the semis.

Aaron-Wooi Yik, who are aiming for their first Open title, will face Fajar Alfian-Rian Ardianto of Indonesia while Sze Fei-Izzuddin will play the winners of the match between Yeremia Erich-Pramudya Kusumawardana of Indonesia and Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen of Denmark.

Misery continued for independent shuttlers Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi when they went down 12-21, 21-9, 20-22 to Fajar-Ardianto.
