June Wei crashes out but Tze Yong ‘Czechs’ into semis

PETALING JAYA: Favourite Cheam June Wei’s challenge fizzled out but Ng Tze Yong marched on in the Czech Open.

Second seed June Wei went down 21-19, 15-21, 17-21 to eighth seed Siril Verma of India in the men’s singles quarter-finals of the seventh-tier tournament in Brno yesterday. Siril had also defeated Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin 21-13, 21-15 in the first round on Wednesday.

Sixth seed Tze Yong, however, stayed steady to beat Krishna Adi of Indonesia 21-9, 21-18 to set up a meeting against qualifier Jason Teh of Singapore. Jason had earlier upset top seed Sheng Xiaodong of Canada 21-13, 21-16.

The 21-year-old Tze Yong had earlier defeated his senior Leong Jun Hao 21-19, 23-21 in the second round.

Youngster Siti Nurshuhaini Azman reached the women’s singles semi-finals after defeating her senior K. Letshanaa 21-16, 16-21, 21-6 to set up a meeting against India’s Ananya Praveen.

It was also a joyful day for Ampang Jaya Badminton Club’s mixed doubles pair Lim Tze Jian-Wong Kha Yan when they defeated Badminton Association of Malaysia juniors Beh Chun Meng-Cheng Su Hui 21-18, 21-12 to reach the semi-finals.

They will play against Singapore’s Terry Hee Yong Kai-Tan Wei Han for a place in the final.
