PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying were determined to pull off their first win in five years against Hong Kong's Tang Chun Man-Tse Ying Suet but they fell short.

The 2016 Rio Olympic Games silver medallists went down fighting 18-21, 21-10, 16-21 to world No. 13 Chun Man-Ying Suet in their first Group D match at the Musashino Forest Sports Plaza on Saturday.

They will play against Germany’s Marks Lamfuss-Isabel Herttrich on Sunday.

Their crucial match will be against world No. 2 Wang Yilyu-Huang Dongping of China and the Malaysians will have to win to keep alive their hope to qualify for the last eight knockout stage.

Only the top two pairs in each group will advance to the quarter-finals.
