PETALING JAYA: Indonesia’s Rexy Mainaky (pic) and Rony Agustinus would have been back in Malaysia, working as coaches with the national team if not for the postponement of the Tokyo Olympic Games.
It is learnt that Rexy and Rony were approached by the Malaysian badminton officials but the duo were unable to commit as Thailand and Vietnam wanted them to continue with their duties as coaches until the Olympics next year.
Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) are looking for coaches to beef up their national and junior teams.
The 52-year-old Rexy, who was with the Malaysian doubles department for seven and half years before he left in 2012, has been doing a great job with the Thai national team as national coaching director.
Under his guidance, Thailand did well at the last two SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur (2017) and the Philippines (2019).
Rony was the national women’s singles coach for four years with Malaysia until December, 2018, before he left to Vietnam in 2019.
The BAM’s current coaching set-up has Wong Choong Hann as coaching director. His coaches are Hendrawan and Indra Wijaya (men’s singles); Paulus Firman, Vountus Indra Mawan and Hoon Thien How (men’s doubles); Datuk Tey Seu Bock and Loh Wei Sheng (women’s singles); Rosman Razak and Wong Pei Tty (women’s doubles); Chin Ee Hui and Teo Kok Siang (mixed doubles).
