Jing Xuan opens season with silver at Singapore Open

PETALING JAYA: National javelin thrower Ng Jing Xuan made a promising start to her season by clinching the silver medal in the Singapore Open held at the Singapore National Stadium yesterday.

Jing Xuan recorded a throw of 47.49m to finish second behind Indonesian Atinna Nurkamil Bahtiar, who won gold with 49.86m. Indonesia’s Kresensia Mobok Ndiken settled for bronze with 41.15m.

Despite falling short of her personal target, Jing Xuan remained positive about her performance, highlighting improvements compared to her previous season opener.

“I was aiming for a better result, but it is what it is. The positive takeaway is that I did better than my season opener last year,” she said.

“I managed to produce my most powerful throw in the final attempt and improved on my earlier distances, which is encouraging.”

Jing Xuan will compete in the upcoming Varsity Track and Field 1 meet at Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang from April 17-19, which she intends to use as part of her preparation.

“My next event is the VTF 1 in a few days. I will treat it as a quality training session and focus on managing my performance,” she added.

Jing Xuan also acknowledged the competitive field in Singapore, noting her familiarity with her rivals while maintaining focus on self-improvement.

“Atinna is very experienced as she was my senior, and our personal bests are quite close. But I just want to focus on being myself and becoming better,” said Jing Xuan.

Currently in her specific preparation phase, Jing Xuan is confident of achieving longer distances once she transitions into the competition phase of her season.

The 25-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in 2025, when she shattered the national women’s javelin record with a throw of 52.17m, surpassing the long-standing mark of 49.34m set by Siti Nur Nadiah Othman at the 2014 Thailand Open.

That record-breaking effort improved significantly on her previous personal best of 49.11m, achieved at the Philippines Open, and now serves as a strong foundation as she targets greater success on the continental stage.
