BANGKOK: Shot putter Jonah Chang has won his first SEA Games gold - and Malaysia's first in 32 years.

The 22-year-old Sarawakian was sensational in the final when he hurled 18.78m at the Supachalasai Stadium here on Saturday (Dec 13), shattering his national record and also the SEA Games record (18.38m).

Silver went to Thailand’s Thongchai Silamool, who did 16.80m, while the Philippines’ William Morrison took the bronze with 16.66m.

He ended Malaysia’s 32-year wait for a gold medal in the shot putt as Arjan Singh was the last to win at the 1993 SEA Games with a throw of 15.72m.

In the Cambodia SEA Games two years ago, Jonah was fourth with a throw of 16.67m.

He currently holds the national record with a throw of 18.66m.
