BANGKOK: It was a memorable day for debutant national shot putter Nani Sahirah Maryata at the Thailand SEA Games.

The 24-year-old not only surprised herself by winning gold, but did so in style by shattering the national record at the Supachalasai Stadium here on Friday (Dec 12).

Overcome with emotion, Nani dropped to her knees and shed tears of joy after her winning throw.

She hurled a distance of 16.36m, eclipsing her own national mark of 15.39m, which she had set at the Super Series leg in Kangar, Perlis, last year.

Areerat Intadia of Thailand finished second with 16.04m while Vietnam's Huyen Kim Thi came in third with 15.92m.

Meanwhile, defending champion Umar Osman finished fifth in the men's 400m race with a time of 47.13s.

Thailand's Joshua Atkinson took the gold with a time of 45.13s.
