PHNOM PENH: Umar Osman was sent to the Cambodia SEA Games for exposure but the 20-year-old was eager to show that he was the real deal.

The youngster caused a shock in the men's 400m race when he took gold by clocking a time of 46.34s at the Morodok Techo Stadium here on Tuesday (May 9).

He also broke the national record set by Mohd Zaiful Zainal Abidin, who clocked 46.41s in the 2001 Asian Junior Championships.

The last Malaysian to win the 400m race was in the 2009 Vientiane SEA Games, when Zafril Zuslaini took the gold with a time of 47.11s.
